Story

Myanmar is a country where sexuality and women's bodies are still seriously taboo subjects. The Vagina Monologues has now been performed for the last two years in Yangon by over 50 Myanmar & international womyn working together in solidarity.

In 2019, we performed for the first time in Burmese language to an audience of more than 700 people. Hearing words never-spoken in public and discussing controversial topics like women's bodies and natural bodily functions, like menstruating - seriously taboo issues in Myanmar.

We are a small group of organisers who stand for promoting feminism, activism, creativity, building communities and sisterhoods, raising our voices and making space for gender equality.

Any money we raise will go to covering the costs of the performances (which we try to keep low, using only passionate vagina volunteers) and the rest to to support another small women-led organisation.

This year, in 2020, we have chosen a small development program, called Wide Horizons, based in Mon state who aim to build the capacity of youth working in civil society. Every year, Wide Horizons aims to expose its students, who are 20-35 to the basics of reproductive health through various trainings.
They started Sexual and reproductive health research with Mawlamyine youth in 2019 which showed many issues with sexual harassment of men and women, so organized a big sexual harassment event in Mawlamyine to 'start the conversation' about sexual harassment.

The background of the V-Day movement -
The rise of misogynist, authoritarian regimes the world over has recalibrated our work, further escalating the urgency with which we feel compelled to fight for gender, climate, economic and racial justice. We are in the midst of a rising tide of right-wing nationalism, white supremacy, fascism, tyranny, hatred of and fear of immigrants, misogyny, femicide, homophobia, transphobia, corporate greed and climate destruction.
