Camigos de Cavalls – Walking the horse track for the horses

A big-hearted adventure is about to unfold on the sun-kissed isle of Menorca. Four couples, affectionately calling themselves “Camigos”, are setting off on an ambitious 10-day trek around the entire island, following the legendary Camí de Cavalls – the historic horse trail that encircles Menorca’s rugged coastline.

The group, all in their 60s, is made up of six walkers and two dedicated support crew. Together, they’ll average about 20 kilometres a day, winding through hidden coves on pine-scented paths, or crossing the dramatic landscape of the wild and windswept north.

Our motivation goes beyond the physical challenge — it’s a heartfelt mission to raise money for Trebaluger Equine Rescue Centre, a sanctuary for ageing, abused or abandoned horses from all over Menorca.

The Camigos team includes Mel and Rob. Mel, is a lifelong horse lover, volunteers at the Rescue Centre’s stables and brings deep passion to the cause. They are joined by Mike and Nicky, Andrew and Vanella, and Paul and Jane — all friends from around Torret in Menorca.

Their journey begins on May 17th at 9.00 am, when they’ll leave the iconic Pigtail Steps down on Mahon harbour. The Camigos hope locals and visitors alike will gather to cheer them on, at the outset or on their way around the island. The first leg takes them to Es Grau, and if all goes to plan, they’ll be back at those same steps ten days later — tired, proud and ready for a well-earned caña.

The Camigos will be sharing their experience on social media, raising awareness and funds for the horses of the Equine Rescue Centre. Their message is simple: after a life of hard work, both humans and horses deserve a little love and kindness.

Because every sore footstep we take will help a horse to heal.
