On Sunday 12th September I will attempt the Great North Run. Not only to raise money for an excellent charity but to raise awareness.

I am runnng on behalf of Columbia Grange School associated with Sunderland Autism Outreach Team.

When our oldest daughter Kaiya was diagnosed with ASD in June 2017 our world fell apart. It was such a devastating blow for myself and Michael that would change our lives forever. I‘ll admit my mental health took a massive hit, so many questions and scenarios running through my head , unable to sleep. The Autism Outreach played a massive roll in supporting not only myself and Michael, but Kaiya too. They were a major part of helping us come to terms Kaiyas diagnosis. From regular home visits, always on the other end of the phone, toddler groups, and of course the first steps course. All of their support helped us best understand Kaiya and how to give her the best care. On helping us they helped her, she is able to communicate better as we can understand her better. Kaiya is such a happy, kind and caring girl that always has a song to sing. With the AOT support we have been able to become the parents we are today!

Kaiya started CG September 2020 during a pandemic. Because of COVID restictions she was unable to visit the school and transition in as we would of liked, however thanks to the amazing support of her teachers Kaiya settled straight in.

Since starting CG Kaiya has come on leaps and bounds. If you know Kaiya you will know how much she struggles to communicate. Thanks to school she can now use one word communication such as to ask for a snack or drink, a major breakthough for her. Kaiya absolutely loves school. They do so many activities that help the children learn in a way they can understand.

CG is an amazing school that offers excellent support to pupils and parents. They have 4 outstanding ofstead reviews and its not hard to see why. Unfortunately both CG & AOT rely on fundraising , they usually hold many events throughout the year however due to COVID restrictions it has not been possible.

On behalf of my family I’d like to give something back by raising money for this wonderful charity which will continue to offer most amazing support for parents and children.
