    Story

June 3rd Maggie travelled to orthopedic referral specialist in Surrey. After huge discussions (inc ethics), we have the treatment to give her the best quality of life and life longevity, would be a custom made elbow plate to fuse the joint and hopefully allow her to weight bare without pain. Whislt amputation is an option, all experts have agreed her other front leg isnt strong enough to cope as the sole weight bearing leg in the long term.......shes only 2 and whilst she copes incredibly well now, it wont last. So we have to try and save her other leg. This isnt a cheap option........worst case scenario is £9500. Due to the advanced boney changes within and surrounding her joint, the plate needs to be custom made......the cheaper off the shelf version will significantly limit the success of the fusion. 🙁

April 30th - costs to date £3250. I am happy to absorb these costs personally but we have a referral visit on 25th May in Surrey and that is going to be very pricey depending on what they decide to do........please help raise more money as this is expected to be £1600 for scans before they even do any surgery! if they can do elbow replacement, this will be many thousands but will update when i have a price.

UPDATE - She is now in the UK and under vet treatment to try save her leg. To date (April 4th) I have paid £1800 for surgeries and travel to the UK. Further surgery/x rays and drugs needed on friday to remove pin @ £700. Revision surgery likely to be required to save her leg.

    HER STORY.........

In Dec 2020, I stumbled across a post on a Romanian village FB page where a local lady posted some photos of a horrifically injured dog. She said she had been lying by the side of the road for a week in freezing temperatures, laid in her excrement and unable to move.

I had to translate this post but the photos said it all, it haunted me all night and i had to do something. The following day I checked and she was still there. So I replied and offered to pay for her treatment if anyone could get her to the vets. A young couple offered to take her but with it being a weekend and a remote village, no vets were open until monday. The young couple took her to their home and got her to the vets the following week.

I made contact with the vet Florin Sabados and the extent of her injuries where horrific and far worse than I expected. She had multiple fractures of her right leg requiring immediate surgery with external fixator. She had several soft tissue injuries and a dislocation of her elbow left leg......her fracture was the priority. Her Xrays were shown to vet friends of mine in the UK and they agreed the prognosis was good without compromising on her welfare, so the decision was made to give her a chance.......she got so far!

I agreed to pay for her surgery and to repair her fracture. £590 inc hospitilisation. This included emergency treatment for all her other wounds too.

In the menatime, i had help from a lovely lady called Silvia, she is Romanian but lives in the US and rescues/helps dogs. She offered to be my translator between young couple and Florin the vet. Florin updates me with photos. I named the dog Maggie.

The young couple grew attached offered to give Maggie a home; nobody else had and she needed care so silvia and i agreed. I told them if they struggled, i would rehome her in the UK. We also made it clear that Maggies future treatment would need to be funded by them (otherwise i should have her). She still had a dislocated elbow.

Sadly over the next couple of months, Maggies follow up treatments were missed, Florin contacted the young couple and offered free visit just to check how she was doing. Her fixator had become infected, she had digestive infection and her elbow was wore.......sadly, although I am sure they had good intentions, she was seen to be back on the streets during the daytime and her veterinary needs were not being met. I paid a further £140 to treat her.

Eventually, in March 2021 Silvia, Florin and myself managed to convince the young couple to hand her over for good and I said I would rehome her and pay for her further surgery. She has severe skeletel Trauma that will take life time veterinary care and further operations in the UK. On 3rd March she had further surgery on her left leg which she is now unable to bare weight on. She was also spayed and started all her vaccinations and passport to enable her to travel to the UK in April. I need to pay for her travel and all her care and fostering for the next month.

I never intended to have another dog but my conscience and morals tell me I cannot leave her, she needs a loving home after all she has been through and I am willing to give her one......nobody else would. I promise she will never want for anything again.

If she exceeds the amount on the page, this will go towards her future surgery and rehabilititation in the UK, which as we know costs considerably more. Thank you all so much.

ps, I didnt want to have to ask for help but too many people said I should given the extent of her injuries and further care requirements. xxx

NOW IN THE UK -APRIL 2021👇

These are her most recent X rays as of April 2021 (taken the day she left Romania Good Friday). This is the leg she has to fully weight bare on at the moment, you can see the bone hasnt fully healed and is misaligned and there is a huge amount of calcification around the bone. Structrurally it is strong enough to bare her weight provided we are careful but it is far more fragile than a normal healthy leg.

    Right leg 👇

Worryingly this is not the leg the vets in the UK are most worried about, she has twice suffered a dislocation of her left elbow which has had two surgeries on already. She had a pin to stabilise the joint 5 weeks ago and this is being removed this week.......she is currently unable to bare any weight on it and is completely wasted. She may well need specialist revision surgery to save the leg as prognosis is very guarded at the moment and there is a real chance she will need ampuation. This is a real last resort as that would only leave the right leg (x ray above) as her permenant only weight bearing front leg.

    Left leg 👇

As with all my animals and as her new owner, I am committed to doing whats best for her welfare and future. She is only 2 and deserves a future. This could run into several thousand pounds........

I realised I haven’t made an update in a while, I apologise! I set up a FB page called “Maggie story - saving the street dog” and have been updating that! Following her septic arthritis, she was rushed to Surrey for emergency amputation before the sepsis went systemic (spread throughout the body). She has made a miraculous recovery and is now very happy! Since then she was also referred to Anderson Moore’s referrals in Hants to have some restorative dentistry at a cost of £4000.

Poor Maggie fell very ill yesterday and was rushed to the vets. She developed a nasty infection which was laying dormant within her bad leg and instigated a large inflammatory/painful response as well as fever. Due to this, the decision has been made to amputate her leg as soon as she is well enough…please keep her in your thoughts to get through this. The costs of this will come out of the JG account (thank you so much) and the account will keep running as it is likely in the future she will need further treatment of her remaining right leg.
