Story

I have severe osteo-arthritis in both my knees, and rarely walk far - it's difficult due to stiffness in my joints and swelling in my legs and ankles, and painful. My body generally is a bit stiff and painful.

I have become nervous about walking any distance, but realise if I push myself, I can walk further than I think. I use a walking stick to help with stability. So I am going to walk every day in August, despite the pain, to raise funds for one of my favourite charities while I also try to get some aerobic exercise. I was going to set a specific daily target, but I am hoping to build up time and/or speed as I go, and will track my time and steps. I hope to start with 10 minutes a day, which doesn't sound much but it's much more than I usually do. My pledge is to walk every day, on top of my normal routines.

If you want to support me in this and raise some desperately-needed funds for the amazing work of Ellis Park (see info below), please donate! And/or share this fundraiser.

Ellis Park is a wildlife sanctuary in Sumatra. It was founded by Femke den Haas, Lorinda Jane and musician Warren Ellis. The team rescues wild animals that have been held in captivity - as tourist attractions or for the illegal pet trade - and give lifelong sanctuary to those who are too damaged to be re-released into the wild. Those that can be are released as soon as they are ready - Ellis Park tends and cares for them with a team of vets and gives them the best life while they are healing. But many are horrendously injured through abuse - kept in tiny cages for years, mistreated so that they come with truly grim physical injuries, some have been bred in ways that mean they would not survive in the wild. Ellis Park gives these a fabulous life in specially built, large enclosures. They grow a lot of fruit and vegetables to feed the animals. They socialise those who have missed out on being part of a tribe. It's beautiful to see the results - but the park relies on donations, as does the work of releasing the animals and the huge work of rescuing and working to make keeping wild animals as pets and roadside attractions a thing of the past.
