Story

The AVRO Vulcan once formed a vital part of the United Kingdom's Cold war defences. Nowadays, this much loved icon has been consigned to the ground. Out of 136 Vulcans built, only 19 remain complete in museums around the globe, with another 12 Nose sections in museums across the UK. At the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum, we are proud to have the nose section of Vulcan XL388 on display. XL388 was scrapped in 1985 and has been at the museum since 2003, but since being scrapped, 32 years of being exposed to the elements have taken their toll. We have embarked on an ambitious restoration programme to restore this cold war giant back to its former glory and allow us to offer you, the public, a chance to look inside an original Vulcan cockpit.

XL388 wasn't in the best of condition overall, with holes in the skin and major damage to the radome, along with virtually all cockpit equipment having been stripped out. Our aim is to repair and replace all missing/damaged items and eventually have a fully fitted cockpit. We have already completed all of the external skin repairs and our next step is to assess the damage to the radome.

The project has also seen XL388 raised onto a new, purpose built stand, which will improve visitor access.

This fundraising will allow us to continue with our efforts to restore XL388 and carry on at full speed towards our goal.

We thank you in advance for any donations that you can make, no matter how big or small as every pound helps us get closer to our goal!

A lot has happened since we launched this campaign to support the restoration of XL388. Of note, we have now installed the replacement bomb aimers blister onto the cockpit and are rapidly working towards the completion of the blister swap work. More parts are arriving every week and this funding has allowed us to purchase a number of rare parts including a Director Horizon for the pilot and a fully original bomb bay control panel for the P1 side console!
