Weʼve raised $195 to Re-thatch our drum school

    Punta Gorda, Toledo District, Belize
Funded on Tuesday, 31st October 2017

    Story

Our drums are getting damaged because our beautiful drum school is leaking.

We need to re-thatch it to restore it's former beauty: (www.warasadrumschool.com)

    No, we're not begging...

If you want to donate no strings attached, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

But if you don't believe in giving something for nothing, we understand.

We then ask our past and future guests, lodge and tour operator partners, and friends and general supporters, to consider paying for your future lessons in advance, purchasing a drum, tshirt, pair of shakas, CD or DVD; or by sponsoring a local child's drum lessons.

Almost five years ago we built our beautiful drum school using traditional methods. 100% biodegradable, sustainable materials were used - not a single nail or piece of string involved! It's 100% wood, cohune palm leaves, and tee-tai vines, and very beautiful.

But it's reaching the end of it's life, and fast! One side espeicially now looks like a grass lawn, and has multiple leaks, which have resulted in damage to two drums. Because of the leaks, some of the underlying beams are getting wet and damaged also. And now the other side is starting to leak too.

We want to re-thatch it the same way, but the estimated cost (to replace all the leaves, and some of the rotten beams) is $2000 - $2500USD. This includes hiring men to go into the jungle to find the leaves and vines, cut them, haul them (by hand and horse) to the roadside, transport them on a hired truck (with gas at $6USD p/gallon) to the drum school, and of course put it all together.

We are a very small business, and simply don't have that amount of funds put to one side (that's at least 6 months income for us!).

If you want to help us by pre-paying for some lessons - here's some suggested donation amounts. If you want to pre-pay for a lesson for more than one person, just multiply by the number of people. Email us when you send in your donation and we'll send you an electronic gift voucher.

$12.50USD - Drum lesson for one person

$15USD - Drum lessons for one local child for a month

    $30USD - Drum-making lesson for one person

$125USD - Half-day package for 2 people including hudut lunch

If you love what we offer, then please support us. If we don't do this within 2-3 months, then we'll no longer be able to offer lessons for locals or visitors.

Or even if you can't help financially in any way, please at least share our campaign with all your networks.

For those in Belize, send us an email, or give us a call and we'll share our bank account details with us if you wish to help.

Thank you - Ruth and Ray

Here is a drum that was damaged when we went away for a couple of days and a new leak in the thatch started. Big thanks to Lisa and Naomi for donating through this page; to Robert Bennett for sponsoring a child's lessons through www.warasadrumschool.com; to Dr. Peitra Arana for pledging to buy a pair of drums to help; to Wil Maheia for pledging $100Bz and to Hillside Health Care for pre-paying for their students' October drumming experience. Every little helps! We're still quite a way off our target, so please continue to share!
