Story

At least 98 people have died after a massive explosion when a fuel tanker collided with a lorry in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown.

On Friday 5th November in the evening a fuel tanker was in a collision in Wellington, Freetown near Choithram supermarket in the East of the city. The fuel ignited leading to an explosion and inferno, which trapped bystanders and those in surrounding vehicles. 99 people are confirmed dead with 92 injured admitted to hospital.

VIONet (Volunteers Involving Organisation Network) a Sierra Leonean NGO is raising money to respond by mobilising volunteers to provide immediate needs for those impacted including psycho-social support.

VIONet is working with the Ministry of Social Welfare in Sierra Leone to respond to needs as per the National Disaster Management Agency's needs assessment. VIONet will support the pillar that deals with psychosocial support and safeguarding.

The money raised will be used by VIONet to support their response and provide vital relief to those affected by the disaster.

VIONet is an umbrella NGO of organisations committed to development and humanitarian action through volunteering in Sierra Leone. The organisation is supported by VSO and UN Volunteers.
