Weʼve raised £440 to keep the beautiful gardens at Wentworth Castle open to the public. They are due to close Spring 2017 due to lack of funding.

    Story

I learnt via a statement released today that the gardens at Wentworth Castle do not raise enough money to pay for the ongoing maintenance to keep them open to the public. As such, they will be closing in Spring 2017.
This is a dreadful loss of a beautiful place. I, and my children and many, many people in Barnsley and surrounding areas take great pleasure from visiting these stunning gardens...for the rhododendrons alone! They are my place of solitude and relaxation.

Barnsley (and the UK) will really lose somewhere special if they close and I'm not willing to let that happen without a fight.

I've no idea how much they cost or what money we need, just wanted to do something on this sad day.

I'm sure with some changes and a bit of clever thinking the gardens could be making much more money, they could be a goldmine for a canny investor!

So the appeal has now featured on We Are Barnsley, in the Chronicle and on BBC Radio Sheffield where they put me on the spot live on air this afternoon. I've another trick up my sleeve which I'll set in motion this weekend but in the meantime keep sharing and thanks again for donations so far 😊

Thanks to all that have donated so far. With regards to the target, I picked a figure out of thin air, I'm trying to find out how much it costs to keep the gardens open to the public on a yearly basis amongst other questions. I've been in touch with Barnsley Chronicle who are investigating this week and will add my questions to their own. In the meantime I've contacted English Heritage who advised that I'm best speaking to Historic England. So my next task is to speak to them. I'm keen to try and find long term funding and support.

I will also run Landscape Weave Craft events for all age groups in order to raise funds too. Anything to help as we cannot lose this beautiful place. X
