Story
I‘m an EYFS teacher at St Werburgh’s C of E (VA) Primary School in Derby, UK. Our school is partnered with Sukantanagar School which is located in the slums of Calcutta. The school has no fixed address but children currently attend school in a dilapidated building and endure hardships and difficulties in their daily lives that are difficult for us in the priveliged U.K. to imagine.
When I think of the children in my class, and in our school, I want the best for them. I want them to have the support and the resources that they need in order to be successful throughout their education and into their adult lives. This starts in the EYFS, and carries on throughout primary school, into secondary education and onwards to adult life. A strong foundation builds a strong education! I want this for the children in our partner school and I want to do my bit to help towards the childrens’ education.
Over the past two years our Head, Mrs Alton, has visited the school to provide vital training to teachers in the area and to look at the work being done ‘on the ground’ at Sukantanagar School. Meanwhile, the pupils and their families have been raising money to support the school. In April I took part in a sponsored sleep-over. I would like to further support the work that our school has been doing by raising more funds and I feel that running the 10k is a great challenge for me to take on!
Before I started my teacher training I was an avid gym goer. Since qualifying I’ve certainly let this slip. Inspired by my mother (who is in her 60s), I started to do the parkrun in January and I have recently started training again. It will be no mean feat for me to run the 10k because as it stands, I’m hovering somewhere between ‘desperately unfit’ and ‘moderately unfit’.
I can’t say that I’ll be the fastest by any means but I’ll be one of the most determined, and after all, it isn‘t about how good you are but how hard you try!
I hope that you can spare a pound or so to support my efforts! If you are a UK taxpayer please also consider adding gift aid to your donation as it boosts the money raised without adding to the money that you spend.
Many, many thanks!
