Story

Marcus is an extraordinary young person with a determined spirit and a loving personality. He has raised thousands of pounds for a range of charities including BHF, The Sick Children’s Trust, Butterwick Hospice, Children in Need, Toilet Twinning and The Great North Air Ambulance. Last year he received a British Citizen Youth Award from the House of Lords for his fundraising efforts. However, now he needs your help.

We’d like to buy Marcus an all terrain wheelchair, perhaps with a motor, which would enable us to explore and expand Marcus’ horizons. We’d like to take him up and down hills, through forests, across fields, along beaches, sand dunes and right down to the water‘s edge. Most people take these experiences for granted but as Marcus gets bigger and older, it’s much more difficult to encourage him out if his comfort zone. We cannot carry him to the sea or across fields anymore and pushing a standard wheelchair anywhere other than a flat path is difficult. However, a specialised wheelchair would enable Marcus to fully experience both our local area of The Yorkshire Dales as well as to explore and travel further afield with the family.

Marcus was born with a rare genetic condition called Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous Syndrome. He also has autism, hearing loss, congenital heart defects, poor vision, learning difficulties, speech delay, low muscle tone and hypotonia. CFC Is present in every cell in his body and affects every aspect of his life. Marcus needs round the clock supervision and support.

We want Marcus to live a fulfilling life and want him to have the same or similar opportunities to his siblings: time with friends and people he loves, education, travel and hopefully meaningful employment and independent living.

Living with a disability can make your world seem a lot smaller, not only for person with the disability but also for the family and carers. Although Marcus is able to walk, he cannot manage any sort of distance or pace so going on a family walk is out of the question unless it is flat enough to push his standard NHS wheelchair. We live in the Yorkshire Dales but are unable to access so many beautiful walks because of Marcus’ disability. We’d love to enjoy the beauty of our local area with an all terrain wheelchair.

Please help us to give Marcus as many amazing adventures at possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
