Story
Wetherby Bulldogs was founded in 1983, Which led to the formation of the junior section in the late 90’s.
At Wetherby Bulldogs we pride ourselves on being a family club at the heart of the community giving young kids in the area disciplines you can’t achieve in any other sport, whist also having fun, and making friends for a life.
In the 2000’s/2010’s the club grew to have over 6 age groups from U8’s through to U17’s with home grown playing moving up into the senior team.
Over the years we have had some great success with several of our players progressing to sign professional contracts with super league clubs. We have had 2 players win the super league, league leaders shield with Castleford tigers, who both went on to feature in the 2017 grand final against Leeds Rhinos where our very own Alex Foster was the only try scorer for Castleford on the night at Old Trafford.
The current crop of representatives in the professional rank are Greg Minikin (Warrington Wolves), Vila Halafihi (Sheffield Eagles), Ebon Scurr (Bradford Bulls), Oli Field (York Knights) with a number of other players on the fringes on first grade pro rugby league.
When COVID hit- it hit our club hard. With the lack of games and volunteers meant we started to decline, losing players to different clubs and ultimately the club folded with no players retained. In 2021/22 we started re-building; we held a training session where 5 kids were present. With the dedication of a limited number of volunteers we managed to get an age group playing games this was our first team of the new era led by Mark Selves which also included the first 3rd generation of a Wetherby bulldogs player playing in this age group. In 2022 we started a girls section, this was the first time the Wetherby Bulldogs has had a dedicated girls only team with the first training session only have a small group of players, Allan Jones, the head coach has driven this age group into new heights with only one season later (2023) having over 25 girls signed on and the team making their first appearance in a major a final, also the first girls team to do so for Wetherby Bulldogs.
The 2024 season will see two new teams pull on the Wetherby jersey. A new U7’s has started training and will look to make their debut around March time. We are also expanding our girl’s section with a new U15’s team who will enter the Girls RL development league.
Our aim is to get a new age group every year to grow the club to what it once was and beyond. Keeping the local kids in our area out of trouble while doing something they love and helping to equip them with values and key life skills going into adulthood all through playing rugby league.
