Story

Many businesses across all walks of life are suffering during these unprecedented times. Everyone needs support and we are no different. Wibsey Rugby Club, established in 1932, is a volunteer run non profit sports association. Meaning, we don’t carry a surplus of cash, and any profit made is used to improve facilities. With the cancellation of all amateur rugby and the imposed closure of the clubhouse, we are in need of any financial assistance available.

Wibsey RFU has been part of the community for almost 90 years. Starting life in the Gaping Goose, and then playing out of various establishments and community clubs over the years. In 1978, Jeff Barraclough, Arthur Deacon & Derrick Hartley remortgaged their homes, much to the dismay of their wives I imagine, and bought what is now our clubhouse on the high street. This became our rugby home and soon after we started playing our games on the Northfield Playing Fields. We have stayed there ever since and enjoyed much success with league and cup winning teams. Recently achieving 2 league promotions in the last 3 years.

Wibsey Rugby League juniors was formed in 1992, by locals Dennis Flaherty and Mick Fielding. Originally playing out of Sedbergh, they went on to produce many wonderful junior teams of all age groups. With the need for a more permanent home and a base to help their growth, both rugby codes came together and merged to become Wibsey Rugby Club in 1998. “There are very few rugby clubs in the whole country with both union and league together.” Following the success of the junior teams, a rugby league open age team was formed in 2005, giving a platform for our older juniors to continue playing as adults. Again, achieving great success in cup competitions.

In more recent times, we became the home of Wibsey AFC, whose football teams joined us last year. A diversity of sports working together as one club to develop.

Wibsey Rugby club has brought many people, families, team mates and friends together over the years. All enjoying and using the facilities available and many remain life long friends. We desperately want to continue to be a sports hub for the community, give young people and adults the opportunity to play sport in a positive and safe environment.

Given the loss of all revenue, I ask on behalf of all the volunteers and players, old and young, if you can help us in these difficult times to keep going. If you can, it would be very much appreciated. Every single contribution would help us continue to provide sports facilities for the community, when we are allowed. Please stay safe everyone and thank you.
