Story
During the school holidays many children from inner city areas will have little or no food each day.
The level of child poverty that teachers and school staff are witnessing on a daily basis is having a dreadful effect on the life chances and education on a number of the children.
Due to poverty in many inner cities local state schools have become a lifeline for poor families by providing the daily essentials – such as food It is shocking that, in one of the richest countries in the Western World, we have children who go hungry every day. This problem becomes more severe during the school holidays when many of these children will have little or no food each day. Indeed in some cases the only hot meal a child enjoys is whilst at school and at weekends and school holidays these children have to go without food.
A recent report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger found that children were returning to school in a worse educational, health and developmental state than that in which they had left in the summer. That report found that as many as three million children face the risk of food insecurity this summer holidays.
Imagine as a parent you had to que up at a food bank to collect a bag of groceries, it is demoralising and for many families their pride will prevent them from even going to the food bank.
The ‘Kids Eat Free – During the summer holidays’ project was developed to try and ensure local supermarkets and private individuals are able to look after those children who go hungry within their local community whilst at the same time removing the demoralising feeling of having to go to a food bank.
The ‘Kids Eat Free’ scheme runs for the 6 week summer holidays ( children get free school meals when back at school) providing the supermarket with a £25 food budget each week for each family. The supermarket then liaises with the family and provides food for the family for that that week
. Please help us ensure no child goes hungry these summer holidays.
