Weʼre raising £2,000 to funding a bench in memory of Will Hay, the master of British comedy.

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

Will Hay was one of the most versatile of entertainers, not only was he a brilliant comic, author and actor, he was also a film director, pilot, polyglot and renowned astronomer.

Sadly, although he was one of the most popular film and stage stars of the 1930s and 40s, Will Hay is not as well known today as he should be, despite his influence on British comedy in the years that followed him.

The Will Hay Appreciation Society would like to create a permanent memorial bench to Will and his co-stars Moore Marriott, and Graham Moffatt, donated to the people of Cliddesden in Hampshire, the location of their most loved and best remembered film 'Oh, Mr. Porter!'.

We've chosen to start fundraising now as 2018 marks 80 years since 'Oh, Mr. Porter!' went on general release.

Cliddesden Station on the Alton and Basingstoke Railway stood in for the run down Irish halt 'Buggleskelly' on the fictional Southern Railway of Northern Ireland.

We have been granted permission from Cliddesden Parish Council for a bench in the village, and we're currently looking into designs.

Any money raised over the target will be placed in a fund towards the ongoing upkeep of Will Hay's grave at Streatham cemetery in London, and towards funding costs for any future memorials by the Will Hay Appreciation Society.

You can join the society at www.buggleskelly.co.uk

Memorial fund update... We've completed the design for the cast memorial plaque. This alone is going to cost £600 and the bespoke bench in the region of £900 - way more than our initial estimate but we want it to be something extra special for the 80th celebrations of Oh, Mr. Porter! Therefore we've upped the target to something I'm sure we can reach by the event in October, leaving us with extra towards the repair of Will's grave. Thank you to everybody who's donated so far, let's keep it going :)

We've hit £700! Thank you so much to everybody who's donated. We're going to keep the fundraiser open and use anything over the cost of the bench to fund future memorial projects and the ongoing upkeep of Will's grave.
