Story
*October 2019 update* Winchester City Council members have decided not to rent the St. George's property to us even though it has been empty for the past few years. They are saying it is a financial decision and they are looking at other options for that block.
We are now actively looking for our other options in Winchester. If anyone knows any suitable building for short- or long-term rent please do let us know.
The Muslim community of Winchester (Hampshire, UK) is a growing and diverse group. We need a prayer hall and centre to come together to build a peaceful community with people both within and outside our faith. Winchester Muslims do not have a regular meeting area.
As a result of local efforts the Council gave us an empty space on lease to use during the month of Ramadan. We put in our own money to use it for the past 2 years but only for during Ramadan as we cannot afford to have it all year round. The Muslim ladies have taken a lead in running this space and a number of families as well as single people have been coming regularly. Imams have been volunteering their time, and daily prayers and iftars have been taking place all through Ramadan 2018 and 2019, alhamdulillah.
To keep this city centre space (comprising a double prayer hall, study rooms, kitchen and washrooms) for at least a year we have negotiated rent at £1000 a month, and have managed to get a few monthly sponsors but this is not nearly enough. Ideally we would like this space for at least 5 years while we build the community and our fundraising activities.
Please start us off by giving whatever you can. You are invited to come and meet us in the centre of Winchester to find out more.
Jazakallah, Shukraan and Thank You in advance for your generosity.
