Story
Hello! We are Danni, Hannah and Siobhan, 3rd year Occupational Therapy students from the University of Worcester.
After a recent talk from People in Motion, a local charity that sends aid to refugees in France, Greece and Syria, we decided we needed to do something - and so we are going to Greece for 5 days in January to volunteer at the main camp. We are working with Help Refugees, who will send us to work in the warehouse on site primarily, and to do other tasks as needed.
We heard stories of people being persecuted, fleeing for their lives, leaving behind everything they knew in the journey for a safe life. Many of the refugees are highly skilled and pool their skills within the camps to make life bearable - for example, a dentist offering basic dental checks. Others are unaccompanied children, whose parents have died en route to the camp, or have sent them ahead in the hope of a better life. People have lost their roles and meaning in their lives.
We are 3 humans that just want to help other humans. We might not be able to change the situation in Greece, but we hope that our small part can help the day to day running of the camp.
We fly out on January 19, 2017 and return on January 23rd.
Breakdown of cost:
Flights for all 3 of us, return @ £143
Accomodation for all 3 of us for 4 nights @~£150
Return travel to Gatwick from Worcester for all 3 of us (including budget airport hotel because of early flight) @~£150
