Story

Thanks so much for visiting my page :)

Throughout 2018, to coincide with the centenary of (some) women's right to vote in the UK, I've been focusing on my "Worth" project which highlights other areas in which women are still underrepresented / discriminated against and celebrating women who work in these fields / campaign for gender equality.

This is a series of portraits is inspired, in part, by Caroline Criado-Perez's campaign to have more women represented on Bank of England issue notes. At the time of her campaign I was horrified by the abuse (including death and rape threats) Criado-Perez received for wanting to celebrate the achievements of women in the same way the achievements of men have been celebrated for years.

The hand cut, paper cuts are made by cutting multiple love heart shapes from genuine Bank of England issue £50 notes, each one depicts a woman who I feel needs celebrating.

Some subjects are very well known, some are not. In November ‘18 I will be having an exhibition of the series (13 planned), which will include info and a talk about how to run a successful gender equality campaign (like Caroline Criado-Perez's). After the exhibition in November I hope to then show the work all over the UK (maybe even the world!). The project has had many successes so far and I’m very, very lucky to have been supported by some lush people to get it to where it is today (especially Bob “Rebel Not Taken” Osborne , Michaela Wetherell and Alix Collinwood-Swinburn ) you can read about some of the exciting things that have happened so far: HERE

As you can probably imagine it’s a pretty expensive project! I am now at a point where, despite selling works from the series, I can’t currently afford to make any new pieces. Which is why I’m doing this!!

I’m not asking for money for nowt- there are a list of rewards below.

Why £2,000?

Every penny counts and every 5,000 pennies = £50 = a new work in the series! (£350 will allow me to make 7 more portraits and complete the set of 13!) £350

There are other expenses too (each work costs £50 to frame and an additional £20 in sketching materials, high quality print outs of £50s for practicing on, and scalpel blades- which, as they need to be super sharp, due to the tinyness of the cuts- I have to change every 3-4 mins. Soooo that’s £50+£20 x 7=) £490

Then there’s promotion for the exhibition of the series (flyers, printed invites, postage, adverts in local papers, sponsored posts on social media) £530

The gallery space is free (Thanks to the wonderful Peter and Johnpaul at Ampersand Inventions!!) but I will need to pay for printing of info sheets, signage, re painting the space after the exhibition, some refreshments for the opening night) £330

Also, I am a parent to two fab little humans. When I’m off making art there are child care costs to cover. (£32.75 per day for nursery for the smallest plus £28 per day for our eldest during the holidays- when 'll be making most of the work. Each work takes me about 16 hours to research, sketch and make so if I was trying to find cover for all of that it would be 7 works x 2 days each x (£32.75+ £28) = £850. However, luckily I’m not, as I have lots of help from lovely folks and I do a lot of work at home in the dead of night when the children are asleep but to cover the rest ...) £300

Right, that’s a grand total of: £2,000
