Story
For the people who know me know that my little sister has experienced news that is life changing for her and her partner. I want to try and raise as much money as possible so my sister can get the wheelchair she desperately needs.
Heres a little bit of my sisters story:
My little sister Phoebe is 23 and has been diagnosed with Complex HSQ (Hereditary Spastic Quadriplegia), which is a progressive condition. This means it can get worse over time, especially if her body isn’t properly supported. She now needs a new wheelchair that properly supports her body and her long-term needs.
At the start of last year, Phoebe was admitted to hospital after losing feeling in her limbs. Because of this, she had to stop working as a special needs teacher, which was a huge part of her life and something she loved doing. She couldn’t walk and spent months in hospital having tests, treatment, and rehabilitation.
After 3 long months in hospital, Phoebe was finally allowed to come home. However, things were very different from before. She still had reduced movement and mobility and had to adapt to everyday life again. Simple things like getting up the stairs, showering, getting dressed, preparing food, and moving around all became much harder. She had to adjust to her new normal and find new ways to stay independent.
In June, she also lost her hair because of everything her body had been through. It has slowly started growing back now, but it was another big adjustment during an already difficult time.
When she came out of hospital, she needed a wheelchair because her mobility was still reduced. She bought one quickly so she could get around and continue with daily life. At the time, it was something she needed urgently, so there wasn’t the chance to get a properly fitted one.
She now has to permanently use her wheelchair. The wheelchair she has now doesn’t fit her properly or support her body the way it should. Because it isn’t fitted correctly, it affects her posture and puts strain on her back, hips, and shoulders. Complex HSQ is progressive and having the wrong wheelchair and poor support can make things worse faster and cause more strain on her body. It is also heavier and harder for her to use independently, which makes everyday life more difficult and tiring.
A properly fitted wheelchair would support her body correctly, protect her posture, and help prevent further strain as her condition progresses. It would make a huge difference to her comfort, independence, and long-term health.
Phoebe is continuing her tutoring business and doing everything she can to stay independent. We are raising money to help her get a wheelchair that properly supports her needs now and in the future.
This is just a little snap shot of the challenges Phoebe has faced, there is so much more going on. Honestly, this girl just amazes me with her strength and determination!
We love you Pheebs!
