Poverty is the primary reason for Pakistan’s rate of child labour.

Out of 40 million Pakistani children, 3.8 million have no choice but to work to support their families. Additionally, almost 11 million of those children work in factories under hazardous conditions. Child labour is still a large cause of poverty in Pakistan because while the country has passed many laws against child labour, those laws have often remained ignored (The Borgen Project, 2018).

Successive governments in Pakistan have also intentionally shied away from this debate. For example, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government did not release poverty statistics for years the years it has stayed in government. Similarly, the PML-N has not released poverty rates for its tenure. Clearly, political parties do not intend to land in hot water by talking about poverty.

Poverty is the main reason why international development institutions like the World Bank finance a variety of projects in Pakistan. Pakistan has received millions of dollars in the name of poverty reduction. However, the various economic policies are framed by the government under the pretext of poverty reduction.

Despite the fact, Pakistan has received a lot of money for fighting poverty from donor institutions; it has not seen significant reduction in poverty levels. This is especially true when comparison is made with India and China. Both of these economies have experienced steep fall in their poverty levels. Pakistan’s progress in this area has been sluggish as best (Nelson, 2018). Why is there no progress in Pakistan, is the money reaching the people or is it just lining the rich and elitist pockets?

45 million children are living below poverty line and are vulnerable to becoming victims of sexual assault and other forms of violence, said an interior ministry official (Wasif, 2018).

What can we do about this? We can start off by helping the families of children who have no income as their sole breadwinner has passed away. By helping families like this to survive we will ultimately prevent their children from doing menial labour and to be able to educate them for a brighter future, in turn we can reduce the perpetual inevitable cycle one family at a time.

In Surah Al’Imran, ayat 92 it is stated that Allah says, “You will not attain to piety until you spend of that which you love. Allah is fully aware”

In Surah Al-Hadid, ayat 18 Allah has stated that “Surely those men (or women) who give sadaqah and have advanced a good loan to Allah, for them it will be multiplied, and for them is a noble reward.”
