A little bit about us,

I’m Zac, a fitness enthusiast and serving firefighter for Lancashire Fire and Rescue service. I suffered a stroke during a Crossfit competition in May 2022, at 32 years of age. Luckily I’ve managed to make a complete recovery! It’s been a long tough journey for me, more so mentally than physically and it’s taken everything I have to overcome! BUT I’m coming out the other side of it now a stronger, better, more resilient person and want to spread as much awareness as possible whilst also helping to raise some vital funds for people going through similar trauma and difficulties that will no doubt be struggling both mentally and physically and may not be quite as lucky as I have been!

Dan Goymer is an On-call Firefighter from Dorset, Both charities mean a great deal to him, sadly his grandmother passed away from a stroke and is a great admirer of the work that they do. Dan has suffered with his own mental health in the past and had reached out to the Firefighters Charity, they offered incredible advice and support enabling Dan to return to work.

The Stroke Association support people to rebuild their lives after a stroke and fund research projects to find new ways to stop strokes happening. They provide specialist support, fund critical research and campaign to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support to rebuild their lives. Rebuilding lives after a stroke is a team effort. It takes the determination of stroke survivors and carers, the generosity of supporters and the dedication of the healthcare and research communities to get there. Two thirds of people who survive a stroke find themselves living with a disability. And 40% of stroke survivors experience anxiety and depression. The effects of a stroke mean many people have to give up jobs they love. Often relatives have to give up work as well, to take on a caring role. A stroke strikes every five minutes, in the UK 100,000 people have strokes each year, and there are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK.

The Firefighters Charity support every member of the UK’s fire and rescue service and their families. By providing easy access to proactive health, wellbeing, and lifestyle support, specific to the fire community. They want to help the community to live well throughout their lives. But, when something goes wrong and a need arises, they are always there. They have innovative, centre-based residential programmes, to a whole of host of digital solutions, they do all they can to give their beneficiaries the physical and psychological support they need, wherever they are in the UK. Their Welfare Services and community-based teams, provide support to individuals and families at home and in their local communities, helping them through life’s tough times, weather that be physical or mental health, wellness coaching, women’s health and more.

Both of these charities are truly incredible, they and the people that depend on them need your support.
