The amazon rainforest is host to over 10% of the worlds total species, a high proportion of which are endemic and endangered. Not only does it hold an immense richness of flora and fauna, but is also the world's largest rainforest spanning 6.7 million km2, being commonly referred to as "the lungs of the earth". Within the last half century alone the amazon has lost 17% of it's forestry cover, not only challenging the survival of species but many indigenous ethnic groups as well. The British Exploring Society is an organisation set up to take young people to areas such as this, in order to aid the scientific research and conservation efforts already present. I've been accepted for a 5 week expedition in the Peruvian Amazon working in partnership with the crees foundation, being involved in their conservation and sustainability studies to help further our understanding of the Amazon through scientific fieldwork. Also carrying out projects in the village of Salvación that will help to build sustainable livelihoods, enabling families to live prosperous and healthy lives without destroying their rainforest home. Part of the requirement is to raise £2500 for the charity.
