Story
I have been volunteering with VSO in Machakos, Kenya for the last 6 weeks, and have found an urgent need to address communication issues surrounding Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
My time so far has been spent working with an NGO in Machakos called BLINK (Blind and Low Vision Network Kenya). BLINK has worked tirelessly since 2006 to dismantle the stigmatisation that PWDs face in Kenya. Here at BLINK we advocate for the rights of PWDs, hold events to raise awareness of disability, educate those with disabilities on their rights and the resources available to them, and assist self-help groups consisting of PWDs to create sustainable livelihoods through income generating activities.
The CEO of BLINK, Ken Siocha, who is visually impaired, has encouraged the community in Machakos to understand that disability is not inability. BLINK is a charity that deserves to be recognised for their efforts over the years, and with the money raised, BLINK can help create an even more inclusive society for PWDs -both in Machakos and further afield.
The money raised will go towards opening an Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Centre, that will enable those with disabilities to have access to information that otherwise would not have been available to them. The IEC Centre will include assistive technology consisting of computers with a software designed specifically for those who are visually impaired, to allow them to access information through audio assistance; and a large screen with a sign language interpreter, which will be available to those who are hard of hearing. Information spanning from news, entertainment, sports and health updates will be available to all.
The IEC Centre is fundamental in creating a more inclusive society where PWDs feel as though they are self-sufficient and do not need to rely on others for assistance or for information.
My team and I are in the process of planning a sponsored Golf Tournament in order to raise additional funds, but would love to start the fundraising efforts as soon as possible.
I would be so grateful if you could support us towards achieving the goal of £1,600, and kindly ask for any donation – no matter the amount!
