Story
Hi everyone,
I’ve been part of an organization called CISV since the age of 10. CISV is a UNESCO partner peace education organization that works with children and youth. CISV teaches multi-cultural understanding by gathering children at international camps, in order to demount inter-group stereotypes and prevent prejudice. The underlying idea here is simple. "You wouldn't go to war against your own friends". CISV was founded following WW2 by Doris Allen, a visionary child psychologist, who believed that prejudice can be reduced through intergroup contact, specifically before the age of 12. For her work with CISV, she was nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
The starting point of the CISV journey is an intensive month long educational program (called village) where 11-year old kids from more than 15 different nationalities gather together. All participants are to learn from another through simulation activities, discussion sections and their close living conditions, with the goals of developing intercultural awareness. I started my CISV journey in the United States at the age of 10, and participated in every educational program until I was 18. I ultimately see myself as a 'product' of the CISV education, and owe a lot to CISV in the person I have become today.
We want to make this experience possible for many children and spread the good that is created through this organization. CISV’s London chapter established the ‘Social Diversity Fund' a year ago aimed at raising funds that assists the families of children who do not have the financial ability to attend CISV programs. Our goal is to raise £5,000 with this challenge and hope this will provide extraordinary experiences for children who otherwise could not participate.
On July 22, I will be attending the cross-continental open water swimming competition in Istanbul, Turkey. This is a 6.5km swimming challenge where participants cross from Asia to Europe by swimming across the Bosphorus. A reflection of the cultural melting pot that is Istanbul as well as CISV, bridging cultures.

Merhaba,
