Story
Hi,
I've been playing rugby for a few years now and have previously represented my country for touch rugby. I've been given the opportunity to gain my first international caps by joining the England Deaf Rugby women's team in South Africa for a tour (not a holiday!)
I lost all the hearing in my right ear at the age of 1 after having the MMR vaccine. It only started to affect me as I became older and found it hard to socialise in loud environments. It caused me to suffer from some social anxiety and I would get awful headaches. When playing sport I often get bewildered and struggle with awareness. Being part of the deaf team means I'm not the only one in this position and we all support each other and learn to communicate in other ways, for example; hand signals.
Unfortunately it's mainly self funded and we have all been asked to try to raise £1500 to support our travel and accommodation. I understand it's my decision to attempt this trip but any help from friends and family would be greatly received.
It's an opportunity I really don't want to have to let slip away! I'd love to be able to help promote deaf rugby in the UK and out in South Africa, hopefully maybe even recruite more players and help young girls in the same position as me to realise they can achieve anything if they put their mind to it. I thank everyone who is able to contribute even the smallest amount.
Lots of love
Zoë
