Story
I am a third year student midwife and a small group of us have been given an amazing opportunity to volunteer in Kenya with the MaaChild Charity.
We will deliver health education to women and girls about female genital mutilation (FGM), a procedure that is internationally recognised as a human rights violation with no medical benefits whatsoever. Over 130 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM, it is now illegal in Kenya as it is in the UK, however this has caused tension surrounding this cultural practice and it still continues.
I love the job that i do and i have developed a real passion for caring for vulnerable women. FGM is a barbaric and completely unnecessary act and women or girls who have been subjected to these procedures are extremely vulnerable. Volunteering with MaaChild will allow me to support these women and educate them around FGM as well as increase my own knowledge around the subject which i can use as a midwife in the UK if ever i care for a woman who has experienced this.
This is a chance for me and my fellow students to visit Kenya and make a difference to women and families.
I would be grateful if you could donate as little or as much as you can towards this amazing opportunity.
Any additional funds raised will be used to support a child in Kenya to go to school.
