am in no way fit or ever ran a half marathon before ... however i have decided to run the ipswich half marathon in sept and raise some money for little Yasmin who`s stolen my heart.....
Yasmins Story:
At age 1, Yasmin was rushed into hospital in a life threatening condition.Her parents were told that there baby girl has Type 1 Diabetes and will now need regular injections and finger prick glucose testing, on a daily basis, for the rest of her life.She is a trooper, and amazes them every day with her resilience and ability to cope with such an all consuming disease. The task of managing such a condition for a child so young is difficult. The rate of her growth, her level of activity, the emotions she feels each day, her picky eating habits are all factors that contribute to Yasmin's blood glucose readings each day.
There is an amazing piece of equipment called a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). This device is permanently attached to Yasmin and gives glucose readings every 5 minutes to a nearby receiver. It alerts them to hypo/hyperglycaemic episodes which is so important as Yasmin does not show any symptoms for these and they can be potentially life threatening. It gives them the opportunity to accurately adjust insulin doses, following the patterns that it regularly charts. The health benefits of this are immeasurable.
Unfortunately these are not available on the NHS. The device is £990. The batteries are £250 each and the weekly sensors are £65 each. Since they have been using it, Yasmin's average glucose reading has halved. We now cannot imagine life without this piece of equipment and would be extremely grateful to you for your continued support.Thank you for reading and for your generosity.
