What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

I am a 20 year old Fine Art student at Goldsmiths hugely passionate about using art practice to encourage social change.

I will be holding an empowering and healing art workshop over the period of a month , combating Gender and Sexual Based Violence on young women in Tsakane Township, Gauteng, South Africa. Using my creative skills, I will be creating a safe space for them to be expressive, practise self care/reflection and to empower each-other through art practise. The activities will help with gaining bodily confidence and reclaiming the body as a place of power, it will encourage the young women to practise self care using art practise. Once the workshop is done, if I raise enough money, I would like to give the young women a platform for their works in a small exhibition to start a conversation about GSBV in their community.

As a young creative woman within the global arena, I am concerned about the status of girls and young women. Also, I am moved by their lack of agency, voice and access to life’s opportunities, using my artwork as a way of researching, dissecting and bringing to light these issues. I particularly focus on oppressive social constructs African/Black women face. I have been brought up in a socialist household, which meant continuously fighting racism and sexism, and often demonstrating. It is important to me to raise awareness of these constructs and try to help woman overcome oppression, whether it’s gender, sexuality, religion or racial based oppression.

Having spent time in South Africa visiting friends and family, I realise that SGBV (Sexual and Gender Based Violence) is a huge issue in Post Apartheid SA. A woman is raped every 23seconds, with 500,000 people raped a year and 1 in every 4 men having raped someone in their life time.

After sending out my project proposal for this workshop, I was awarded a Fellowship position from The TuWezeshe Akina Dada Africa-UK Young Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Movement, an international program which seeks to empower a generation of African and African Diaspora young women to become effective leaders in the campaign against sexual and gender based violence. I have completed training in how to be a 'Young Women's Leader' .

To assist in changing the status of girls and young women I will be working with MEMPROWSA, at their Ekurhuleni Site in Tsakane. MEMPROW SA’s vision is to promote girls & young women’s rights and cultivate their leadership. They stand for protecting girls against sexual & gender-based violence within communities and learning institutions. They desire is to see girls and young women flourish, and become empowered &self-reliant.
