In September 2012 I was badly injured in the infamous Bestival coach crash, I broke my back and badly severed my spinal cord which left me paralysed from the waist down. Over the next 6 months I was completely wrote off by all doctors in the NW of England, promised day in day out my injury was simply too bad - a "nightmare" injury as the head doctor would put it, that I'd never move a muscle again in my legs let alone walk. To put it simply, I was promised point blank that i'd live the rest of my life paralysed in a wheelchair.
12 months post-injury my parents after extensive research dragged me down to what I think is the most advanced and specialist Physio in the world - PrimePhysio Cambridge, to me then it was a waste of time and I didn't understand why they wouldn't listen to the doctors professional verdict.
After training down there for some time, one day one muscle in my leg slowly started to flicker, just a tiny contraction but this was the moment we had been praying for.
We've built this whole thing back up now from literally nothing, I progressed from the wheelchair onto a Zimmer frame with callipers (braces), then broke out of the callipers and done 12 months on the frame, after this progressed to crutches and have now started to walk completely unaided.
So down to a combo of both myself and PrimePhysio I have now completed a 5k walk on crutches and am currently training for a 10k in Barcelona. Eventually I'm aiming for marathons around the world and triathlons too, in April I completed my first triathlon in Barcelona which was my biggest achievement to date, but the 10k will top that no doubt.
I am a British swimming gold medalist
too, a "true athlete" as put by Taylor Kevin Isaacs, Americas #1 Physio.. All down to PrimePhysio - it's a life changing recovery centre and by doing these events I'm hoping to raise money so I can pay for other people from Liverpool to have access to this elite level therapy that I was fortunate enough to have
