This year, I'm running for Dan and the Perley Veterans.
Daniel Clapin, a long-time Perley Veterans supporter and my neighbour for eleven years while we lived in Gatineau, passed away early this year. But Dan was more than just a neighbour - he was a close friend and mentor to my family and me. He always had a story to share about one of the amazing veterans at the Perley, and he could typically be seen wearing a running t-shirt wherever he went. He'd often invite my son over to pick tomatoes or raspberries, and frequently had a gift and some grandfather's love to share with him. He was a loving friend, father and active community member who shared much of himself with others right up to the end of his time on this earth.
Ten years ago, Dan and I started running and raising money for the Perley Veterans via the Ottawa Race Weekend (yes...that was ten years ago!). The efforts of the wonderful team at the Perley continue to be close to my heart, and their efforts thrive because of generous and loving donations from our collective communities. Every day, the equipment and programs funded by donations empower residents at the Perley to live with more fun and in greater comfort and dignity. Something as simple as a pottery class or an improved mobility device provides that extra bit of love to residents, bringing a sense of joy and security. This year's funding will enable Perley Health to create purpose-built spaces where interactions between seniors, Veterans and children flourish— spaces designed with warmth, accessibility, and community in mind. Your donations make these opportunities possible, lifting the morale of the seniors and veterans who benefit from the care offered by the Perley team. This team truly is an amazing bunch, and it is our honour to run in support of their efforts.
