Great North Run 2025 · 7 September 2025 ·

The greatest half marathon in the world. For the last 85 years, Diabetes UK has been at the forefront of diabetes research. We've discovered how to put type 2 diabetes into remission and were working day in, day out to find a cure.

Story

Did you know someone is diagnosed with diabetes every two minutes? As many as 4.9 million people are living with diabetes in the UK right now (including me 😅).

My name is Jamie, I'm a Type 1 Diabetic from Teesside and I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2025 to raise money for the amazing charity, Diabetes UK.

Taking part in this event has come as part of a journey that I started in January 2024. I took an interest in running as part of my efforts to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Running came with its challenges; especially with blood sugar control - but with the fantastic support from the specialists at North Tees Hospital - I now understand how to run further in a safer manner (less hypos)!

By accomplishing this milestone, I hope to prove to myself and other diabetics that we can push ourselves to accomplish great things; despite the challenges we will inevitably face.

Diabetes UK provides a range of services and support to those who live with the condition, they also make significant contributions towards the research and development that goes into finding a cure for Diabetes. More information about what the charity does can be found on their website https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about_us/what-we-do/care-and-support
