Story
This year I turned 50 which has brought with it lots of reflection and intentional living. In addition to some personal and professional goals, I'm committing some of my time and energy to a cause that has been near and dear to my family for over a decade.
This October, I will be traveling to Ghana with Self-Help International, a non-profit organization based out of Waverly, Iowa, with the mission to alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves. My father-in-law has been heavily involved in this organization for over a decade based on ties to Iowa and the overall agriculture community. The non-profit serves rural communities in Ghana in West Africa and Nicaragua in Central America, to improve the population’s quality of life with dignity.
During our Tour de Ghana, I will be riding a motorized tricycle across the country (over 500 miles) and visiting the communities Self-Help serves. We’ll meet families whose lives have been transformed through access to education, micro-credit loans, and other resources. These vehicles will be donated to various communities following the ride supporting overall transportation, bringing crops to market, getting children to school and helping neighbors in emergencies.
My personal goal is to raise $12,000 in support of Self-Help’s life-changing programs in Ghana and I’m about 65% there. Every dollar makes a difference, and every gift is an investment in dignity, empowerment, and sustainable change.
