Story
This October, my 12-year-old son Will and I are joining Tour de Ghana — riding motorized tricycles across the country to meet families supported by Self-Help International. We'll be riding along side my Dad who is a longtime SHI supporter and was actually the one who dreamed up Tour de Ghana in the first place. Three generations, one ride.
I joined this adventure last year on the inaugural Tour de Ghana, and it changed how I see the world. We stayed with local families, rode through rural villages, and saw firsthand what these programs make possible — not as statistics, but as real changes in people's daily lives. It moved me so much that I wanted Will to experience it too.
Self-Help International's mission is to Help People Help Themselves. The teach methods and provide tools that let people build something lasting for themselves. SHI provides micro-loans, trains farmers to increase their crop yields, runs a school feeding program to fight childhood malnutrition, helps girls stay in school, offers financial literacy training to women, and improves access to clean water.
Will wanted to help raise support too, so he wrote his own letter. His favorite fact to share: "Did you know that $65 can provide breakfast for a kindergartener for a whole year? That means if you donated $1,000 you could feed 15 kids for a whole year!" Read his entire letter in the photo gallery on the top of this page.
Will and I want to help change lives, will you join us by supporting us on our ride??
