I joined the Dessert Foothills YMCA when I moved to Carefree.   Soon after, I met the director of aquatics, Shelbi Schmidt.   Shelbi’s enthusiasm and drive were felt everywhere in aquatics. I was impressed with Shelbi and her focus on teaching water safety skills and swim lessons to as many kids and adults as possible. 

Drowning is a preventable accident and the YMCA’s Safety Around Water Program is helping to prevent them.  

This program is what inspired me to volunteer as a swim instructor. The program provides free swim lessons to children and adults at a cost of $100 per student. I want to help the YMCA reach as many kids as possible to have access to swim lessons and learn life saving water safety skills.
