Twilight Walk - Walk it your way 2025 · 1 March 2025 to 31 March 2025 ·
My wonderful twin sister Georgie was diagnosed, after an unexpected seizure, with a grade four glioblastoma brain tumour [as one friend put it, the Great White Shark of cancer]. We're incredibly lucky and grateful that she's outlived the average life expectancy of 12-15 months and just keep hoping. But there's been no change in the treatment in decades and no one knows how to cure them or why some live six months and some two years.
BRAIN TUMOURS are the BIGGEST CANCER KILLER of children and adults under the age of 40.
But ONLY 1% of cancer research FUNDING is allocated to the disease.
In 2018, the government PLEDGED to INVEST £40m in research, following the death Dame Tessa Jowell, but so far JUST £15m has been spent.
As part of their push to do something for Brain Tumours and the Least Survivable Cancers, Georgie and my brother Charlie Maynard, MP for Witney, met Prof Daniel Ebner who is working with some of the best scientists in the brain tumour field. He says they are making fantastic breakthroughs. But they desperately need help to get the promising looking research into clinical trials. This is the major stumbling block. They NEED FUNDING to make this happen.
If we can crack this the potential is huge. But speed is key, we can't wait.
Georgie is inspirational. Still working hard. Still going to as many of her kids matches as possible. Still pushing for female equality and Proportional Representation. A fierce supporter of sport and particularly women in sport, she also some how finds the time to support them (the Lionesses, the Matildas, Andy Murray, Arsenal!)
Meanwhile, she's also given a talk in Parliament, met scientists and has been working hard for The Brain Tumour Charity, giving TV and press interviews to spread the word. But knowing that the tumour is a ticking time bomb, is completely heartbreaking, particularly for her husband Gary and their five wonderful kids, Jay, Jimmy, Pops, Ned & Zinnie.
So we're joining Georgie on her Bluebell Walk on Sunday 27th April to raise money so others don't have to suffer in the same way. We would love you to help...
- Join us if you'd like to walk too
- Sponsor us if that works better
- Spread the word to anyone that can help... funding, pharmaceuticals, government.
We want to shake things up in the brain tumour area so that those DIAGNOSED IN THE FUTURE, HAVE A FUTURE.
