Welcome to the Action Against Heartburn team fundraising page.
Action Against Heartburn is a group of charities that promote early diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. Each charity is a registered charity in its own right but the charity Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign organises the bank account that funds our joint activities.
The UK has the highest rate of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC) in the world. OAC represents 70% of the UK's oesophageal cancer. The 5 year survival rate is low - around 15% (breast cancer is 87%) but if it is diagnosed in its earliest stage the survival rate is 90%.
OAC is associated with persistent heartburn, so we promote public awareness about the dangers of persistent heartburn and a condition called Barrett's Oesophagus which can be a precursor condition. Diagnosing, monitoring and treating Barrett's Oesophagus is something we can do now, wiothout waiting for the results of sophisticated research.
