On 21st - 22nd August 2014 twelve members of the Gunite Group will be attempting to climb the highest mountains of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours (with a combined total distance of 42 kilometres and a total ascent of 9,800 feet) in aid of Help for Heroes and BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association).
The two charities mean a great deal to the company and especially our Senior Contracts Manager Matthew Gillborn and his family…
“My son James was injured in Afghanistan by a buried IED. As a result of this he lost his right leg below the knee.
James, my wife and I were all looked after to a very high standard by Help for Heroes and BLESMA when James first returned to the Queen Elizabeth hospital and this care has continued to this day.
When he was airlifted from the battlefield directly to the Queen Elisabeth hospital all of his clothing had been removed for his treatment and to minimise infection, nothing had remained with him not even his underpants.
Help for Heroes and BLESMA said that they were getting accustomed to men turning up in this state and quickly put together a basic pack of clothes, toiletries, an Ipod and cards to operate the hospital TV and telephone.
When James was confined to his bed, his mental condition was helped greatly by the fact that he knew he had good support; this was down in a large part to the 2 charities.
Following his discharge from hospital both charities have been invaluable in supporting James and his family and aiding his recovery by keeping his mind and body busy.
