Kaylee's Story

On Monday, 17th June 2018, my mum was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Carcinoma, a lung cancer that makes up 10-15% of all lung cancer cases and is aggressive. It is in both of her lungs and has spread to her liver meaning it is not curable and not operable (staged as extensive lung cancer/stage 4); any treatment she receives is to extend her life and improve the quality of it, but it will not cure her. This has been the biggest shock to our whole, massive family, and we are trying to come to terms with this and what it means for her and for us.

She started chemotherapy on Monday 25th June 2018, just one week after her diagnosis. The first two Macmillan volunteers we met, Jan and Joy, were absolutely amazing and so positive, they commended my mum for being positive herself and made us laugh! They have given us a fantastic first impression of the services that Macmillan can provide and how helping others can be so fulfilling after going through something so devastating. I made sure to pick up any and all leaflets and information booklets that were freely available to help my mum and my family with anything that we may need, and these have been invaluable.

Priya's Story

On 13th April 2017, my mum was diagnosed with stage 3c Ovarian Carcinosarcoma; a very rare type of cancer affecting less than 1% of those diagnosed. This is a terminal diagnosis with a grim prognosis; the care she receives is palliative. Having had two major operations on 22nd May 2017 and 4th December 2017 (meaning Christmas spent in hospital) and 6 gruelling cycles of chemotherapy in between.

I cannot fault a single member of staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ who have been involved in her treatment. It’s a cruel disease, and my mum has been so incredibly strong through the whole process. Any money raised will be so valuable to my mum, Kaylee’s mum and anyone else diagnosed with this awful disease.

Please donate what you can. The statistic is now 1 in 2 people are going to be diagnosed with cancer, and so this is not just to help our mums, but anyone that you know who may be affected in the future.

Macmillan Cancer Support are here to help you find your best way through from the moment of diagnosis, so you’re able to live life as fully as you can. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
