Oliver's Kicking Cancer Fundraising

Many thanks for visiting Oliver’s Kicking Cancer Fundraising page.

Oliver’s story - At the age of 1, Oliver was diagnosed with Horner’s Syndrome (droopy eyelid and small pupil) in his left eye.  It is a harmless condition but it’s vital to discover the cause.  After a year of scans and further investigations Oliver received a diagnosis of Neuroblastoma (cancer of the central nervous system) in May 2013 and was classed as intermediate risk.  The day after we received this shocking news, Oliver had his Intravenous Line surgically inserted into his chest (which ended at his heart) and he then started chemotherapy immediately. His aggressive treatment schedule included six rounds of chemotherapy, an operation to remove the tumour, radiotherapy and he is currently undergoing 6 cycles of an oral chemotherapy drug which we are administering at home.

Oliver has been so resilient throughout his gruelling treatment and we have been so proud of how our little son has been kicking cancers butt!

Matthew and I have decided to hold two fundraising events this year in support of two charities that have become very close to our hearts over the last year.

Firstly, Keech Hospice

During the awful months of Chemotherapy when Oliver was getting very sick and extremely unsettled, he only wanted me and I was struggling to keep him contented.  Our oncologist advised us to get support from our local hospice so we were referred to Keech. Keech has been absolutely wonderful to Oliver and our family, allowing some respite for me and providing Oliver with a programme to help him with the transition from having received full time medical treatment for the past seven months back to more normal daily life (eg play groups, nursery and most importantly mixing with children away from me).  Unlike most other toddlers Oliver has never been to a music or gym class. Keech is a really great place for him to spend time away from me because they can attend to any of his medical needs as well as provide him with a more ‘normal’ routine ready for him to start pre-school in September. Oliver loves coming to his ‘tots and toys’ class at Keech and we will always be thankful for everything they have done for us. The support they provide to all their families is incredible and they truly deserve any financial support possible

Our second charity is the Neuroblastoma Society.

“The charity's sole purpose is the relief of children suffering from neuroblastoma, and to achieve this it raises funds for medical research into improving both diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The Society also offers an opportunity for parents to give each other mutual help, support and comfort.” Neuroblastoma is such a rare form of childhood cancer which means research is so vital in the fight against trying to find a cure. In fact, due to recent research involving the treatment given to intermediate and high risk Neuroblastoma patients, Oliver’s treatment plan had been revised giving him a better prognosis. So that research helped save our sons life.

So what are our two fundraising events:

1) St Albans Half Marathon (8th June) Matthew and a group of friends which so far consist of Nick H, Vix, Lynsey, Nick W, Rich, Claire, Carly, Marije and Maguns have all signed up and we’re asking for donations to keep them inspired throughout their training and during the race itself! Vix, Nick and Matthew have already signed up for the Milton Keynes 10K in March as preparation for the big day so they all deserve all the encouragement and support possible! Do contact me on if you'd like to join 'Team Marchant' for this race and help raise money as well as getting super fit!

2    2) Oliver’s Gala Charity Concert (13th December). We are holding a very special music concert with some world class performers and tickets will be going on sale later in the year. [We are looking for sponsorship from local businesses to help stage this wonderful event so if you’d like to get involved, please contact me on for further information]

So if you’d like to donate and help us raise some money for these amazingly important charities, please click on the donate button below. If you’d like to donate to both charities, you will need to make two just giving donations by clicking on both donation buttons.
