Thank you for visiting our team fundraising page.
Last year our wonderful, beautiful friend Ruth Jennett left this world suddenly and far too soon.
We are a group of Ruth's friends who met her at University or via her various volunteering pursuits who have come together in her memory to raise funds for causes she passionately believed in.
We will be running 10k in London on 16th September. Ruth was a marathon runner in her university days and loved to run and encourage others to do the same! For many of us, it is the first time we will have run this far, so it will be a challenge!
Our team consists of:
Arjuna Weerasinghe
Christina Walton
Dominique Brady
Julia Harrowsmith
Kat Hodgson
Lucy Gregg
Luke Trinder
Lorna Fraser
Rachel Fox
We will be raising funds for three charities. Please feel free to choose which charity you would like to give to, ideally we would like the donations to be split as evenly as possible between the three.
Here is a little about each of them and why they were important to Ruth:
Alzheimer’s Society – Ruth was a long-time supporter of charities supporting people affected by dementia because her Aunt Yvonne suffered from this disease. The Alzheimer’s Society works to keep dementia firmly at the top of the political agenda and pushes for a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice. The organisation also provides over 3000 local support services.
Oxfam – Ruth believed in social justice and was interested in international development issues. Rachel and Arjuna met Ruth in 2007 in India on a course to learn about development at a grassroots level. Lucy and Julia met Ruth when she interned at Oxfam in Oxford in 2009. In 2009 Ruth ran a marathon in Belfast to fundraise for Oxfam's programmes in South East Asia which helped prepare for and protect millions of people from flooding and monsoon rains.
Via Wings is a faith-based organisation working to help those in need in the community of Dromore, Northern Ireland the area where Ruth grew up. The charity works to help change lives by helping break the cycle of poverty. Via Wings helped Ruth through some tough periods of her life and here she was surrounded by people from her Christian faith, which was central to her life. Ruth eventually become a member of staff at Via Wings and when we told them we would be fundraising for them in Ruth’s memory they said:
‘Ruth was a very special lady & we miss her every day. She was a remarkable member of our team…and such a huge part of Via Wings, she is much missed. It is lovely to know that her memory is being honoured by her friends and that the charities she loved will benefit’
Thank you, please give generously!
