Thames Swim 2016

Team photo

Thames Swim 2016 is a personal challenge where I aim to swim 137 miles down the Thames river with the hope of raising £5000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Helen & Douglas House.

Starting on Saturday 13th August, I will swim 137miles from Lechlade arriving at Putney Bridge on Sunday 28th August

I aim to swim 10 miles a day.

The short answer is because it is there and I enjoy the physical and mental challenge. I also recognise that challenges like this are a great way to raise money for charity.

As said, I am raising money for two charities - Helen & Douglas House and The Cystic Fibrosis Trust - with the aim of raising £2500 for each.

I chose Helen and Douglas house, as they are a centre who support children with life-shortening conditions local to me. I chose The Cystic Fibrosis Trust as my Mum's friend's daughter has CF, and I know first hand what she has to deal with.

Please take a look at how much each charity page has raised, and donate to keep the totals at a similar level.

From my research, the main dangers are catching illnesses from all the pollutants and sewage that ends up in the river. No getting around this one really.

To quote The Port of London Authority, the dangers for swimmers in the tidal section of the Thames includes:

- Powerful tides

- Eddies and undertows – will suck swimmers under in seconds and keep them below the surface for days.

- Bitingly cold river water

- 39 million cubic metres of raw sewage!

So please dig deep and donate.

Thank you in advance,

Chris Mount

The journey has been mapped and is also being tracked live and I will be posting regularly on social media. So if you want to swim with me or say hi, have a look below to see where I am.
