Our family is affected by the eye disease Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy ("ADOA"). Helping to fund research is really important to us as two of our children have inherited the condition. ADOA affects 1 in 50,000 people, but although rare there is a 50% chance of inheriting the disease from a parent who is affected. ADOA causes varying degrees of sight impairment from mild to very severe.
Before Beth was four years old we noticed that she couldn't see very well: she looked closely at everything such as picture books and television and couldn't read numbers on front doors unless she walked right up to them. A few months and several tests later, she was diagnosed with ADOA, along with her 6 year old brother, Edward. Hannah and Amy, two years younger than Beth, have good eyesight and appear not to have inherited the condition. However, they are devoted Fight for Sight fundraisers too!
We want to help fund research to give people like Edward and Beth a future where they can see as well as a full sighted person, without needing vision aids and not be restricted by their vision. Wouldn't it be fantastic to wipe out this condition so that no one is at risk of inheriting it?
