We are conducting a loaded march (Marching at a fast pace carrying a bergen weighing 25kg) from Port San Carlos to Stanley, a distance of approx. 65 miles in support of Combat Stress.
On 2nd April 1982, the Argentine military junta invaded the Falkland Islands.
Several days later, a Task Force of Royal Navy and Merchant Navy ships set sail carrying 3 Commando Brigade, made up of 2 and 3 Para, and 40, 42 and 45 Commando Royal Marines.
3 Commando Brigade landed at San Carlos and Port San Carlos on 21 May. A beach head was quickly established and plans made for the move to Port Stanley, the capital.
The Atlantic Conveyor, carrying 4 Chinook and 6 Wessex helicopters was hit by an Exocet missile on 25 May, and sank under tow on 28 May. Just one Chinook, Bravo November, survived.
The only way for the British Forces to now reach Stanley was on foot. The troops broke out of the beach head and began a yomp of approximately 60 miles carrying as much equipment and ammunition as they could carry.
The war ended on the 14th June 1982 with 255 Service personnel having paid the ultimate sacrifice. What is not well known, is that a greater number of service personnel who served int he Falklands War have taken their own lifes due to there experiences in combat.
We wish to march the same route that the task force marched to promote the hard work that is done by Combat Stress and to raise money for them to support ex-service personnel suffering.
The loaded march will be conducted within 24 hours over a two day period in February 2013. The first day will be on the Friday and we will finish the March outside Government House, Stanley on the Saturday afternoon.
