The Bustard Ride 2019 - in memory of Jerry Wickham

Team photo

On 27 September 2019, a group of staff from across Wiltshire Council, and Jerry's son Ollie Wickham, will join together to undertake the second annual Bustard Ride.  This year’s ride is being held in memory of Jerry Wickham.  Jerry was an avid cyclist; he was due to undertake the first day route of the Tour de France in 2018, but he had to cancel due to his health.  This is not quite the Tour de France - but we think Jerry would have appreciated a "Tour de Wiltshire" in his name!  The final route is to be confirmed, but it will encompass Jerry’s home village, and the villages he represented as a Councillor.  The final route will be shared on this page when it is ready.

Jerry had a long, distinguished career dedicated to serving the public of Wiltshire, firstly with the police before representing Wiltshire Council.  Jerry passed away in July 2019 from Prostate Cancer, but Jerry’s illness did not define him.  He was defined by his integrity, values and his skill as a cabinet member.  Jerry always put others before himself and was wholeheartedly committed to his local community and Wiltshire.  Jerry fought Prostate Cancer for several years, always with bravery, showing his integrity and humour throughout.  He used his diagnosis, and his platform as a councillor, to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer and to encourage men of all ages to be vigilant of the symptoms.

We want to continue Jerry’s dedication to raising awareness of Prostate Cancer by fundraising for two distinguished charities.  Firstly, the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, Jerry championed this charity for many years and any money donated to them will go directly to research for Prostate Cancer.  The second charity is Dorothy House Hospice.  Dorothy House cared for Jerry toward the end of his life and the work they do with not just the patient, but also the families of cancer sufferers is astounding.

You are able to choose which charity your donation is shared with, we would like to try and make donations as even as possible.  Please give anything you can to support these charities.
If you are a UK tax payer please remember to tick the Gift Aid box to allow the chairties to reclaim an additional 25% on all eligible donations.

Thank you.
