Two years ago I first thought about swimming the English Channel - 22 miles across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes from Dover to northern France. A few months later my ambitious plan started to become a reality; I had told my wife of my latest 'great idea', spent hours Google researching, found a sea swimming coach and began training. This meant swimming - countless hours every week swimming in pools, lakes and the sea at every opportunity. Training has no doubt been challenging - I have managed 10 hour non-stop practice swims, trialled night swimming and suffered numerous jellyfish stings to my face! Apart from the occasional 'thumbs up' from my wife or banana thrown at me by my coach, the thought of three very personal charities benefiting from sponsorship for this event has been the biggest motivation.
I am raising money for three separate children's charities, who have each provided incredible care and support to close friends and their families at the most difficult time of their lives.
The three charities are;
The Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal Children's Hospital
The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Disorder charity
The Helen and Douglas House Children's Hospice
