We have decided to do a sponsered climb of Ben Nevis on the 10th October (weather permitting) to raise money for 3 charities - Aching Arms, SIMBA & Sands Lothian.
10th October is a significant date for us as it is the date that our little boy, Lewis Ben Russell, was due to be born. It also falls in Baby Loss Awareness Week so it all feels right to be doing this.
Whilst in Cambridge for a work event my waters broke and I rushed to hospital. I was only 18+4 weeks pregnant at the time. They ran scans and confirmed that I had lost pretty much all of my fluid but I was not in labour. Dave drove all the way from Linlithgow and made it to Cambridge at 2am, baby was born around 6am.
We were held in hospital for a day an half as I had to go through an operation to remove the placenta and showed signs of infection. During our time at the hospital we were able to spend time with our baby and we were given a memory box from SIMBA which contains little hand and footprints from Lewis, they are so very precious.
We were also given an aching arms bear. This is such a lovely gesture. Families that have gone through babyloss donate a bear to another family going through babyloss. At the worst time in the world this let us know that we were not alone.
Since coming home I have seen a befriender from Sands Lothian and I am currently on a waiting list to be able to see a counsellor from sands to help me through.
It has been an awful time but I will be forever grateful to Lewis Bens' life. He has taught us that there is so much more love to give. He has given us climbing Monros together - this would not have happened if it wasnt for him.
