We will not be accepting gifts, instead we have started a UK Charitable Trust in our family name called the Darren and Melissa Roos Foundation Trust. Each year, we will be making contributions to a charity or charities that are meaningful for us both as well as for our 3 children. We will be involving our children in the chosen charity each year. We are hopeful they will grow up giving back more than they take and will learn about charitable giving during their life. We will volunteer each year as a family to our chosen charity.
This first year, in January of 2019, we will be donating to two charites:
First: Outreach Moldova we learned about through our friends Andrew and Luisa. Andrew has been supporting this incredible charity for more than 15 years. We were both moved when they told us about their involvment and what a small donation can do for these orphaned girls with disabilities. We had the privledge of learning a lot about the orphanage when Andrew hosted a Gala Ball this Spring. We were touched by the cause and how in need these girls are. Outreach Moldova (ORM) was set up by a Dublin based Irish Medical Doctor in 2000 who had traveled to Moldova as part of a Humanitarian Aid trip to multiple orphanages and residential institutions. On returning to Ireland she decided to set up an organisation that would provide more practical ongoing services to the most vulnerable children living in state care. The girls have been abandoned or orphaned; all had a special or extra need and were in serious need of a multidisciplinary approach towards their care and their lives. With over 18 years of experience on the ground, ORM is an Irish Charity that excels in the provision of care with the input of large national and international professional specialist teams. ORM have had the privilege of supporting thousands of children in need throughout Moldova. To find out more please go to: https://www.outreachmoldova.org/. Half of all donations will go in the aid of Outreach Moldova.
Second: The second charity is a very special charity based in London called the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). As parents to 3 young children, we are thankful everyday for their continued good health and appreciate all who work to restore the health of children who are seriously ill. We have friends who have had children in GOSH for specialty operations and health support and are grateful for the outstanding care that GOSH delivers. Every day, 618 children and young people from across the UK arrive at GOSH. Every day, doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses, and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs. And every day is a chance for us to make a difference. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential. A better future for seriously ill children starts with our donations.
Using the money from our charitable donation it will fund:
1. The rebuild and refurbish wards and medical facilities designed around children, and which let the hospital treat more patients.
2. Fund pioneering research to tackle complex childhood illnesses
3. Pay for the most advanced equipment for treating the toughest and rarest conditions.
4. Fund services that help make life in hospital as normal as possible for young patients and their families
