Story

We are raising money for Weston Park Cancer Charity because over the last 12 months we have lost people close to us to cancer. Weston Park have been amazing at helping prolong their lives in the most comfortable ways possible. Not only do they help the ill, but help family members too before and after the patients' unfortunate passing.

Although they do the best they can, we can never do enough to assist, which is why we have decided on this 100 mile walk from Barnsley Town Centre to Ambleside in the Lake District. This event will take 4 days walking an average of 28 miles per day. We know it will be challenging and unbelievably demanding physically and mentally but are determined to finish this mammoth task to help those who are no longer able to help themselves.

So we ask everyone to please spare what they can to go to this amazing cause. Did you know that 1 in 3 people at some point are affected by cancer? The more we do now, the better our treatment will be if any of us are unfortunate enough to be diagnosed. You wont just be helping those currently affected, but would also be helping yourselves.

We would like to thank the following companies for helping us organise this event:

Ramada Jarvis
Langcliffe Caravan Park
Enterprise Foods

Thank you to all who have donated so far. We are still a long way from reaching our target so please keep the donations coming.

We are having other smaller events to help raise the £10,000 such as bake sales, bag packing in Morrisons and raffles. If you can think of any other ideas or would like to help us in some way please email Steve at steve3112@hotmail.com or give me a call on 07872 693154.

UPDATE - 20th April 2010

Hi All,

We have decided that the money we are raising will be put towards the Weston Park Cancer Support Centre.

It is a drop in centre supporting people living with cancer across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Derbyshire, North Lincolnshire and beyond. Over 6,000 people annually are newly diagnosed with cancer across the 4 counties alone and this is a service where demand is growing constantly. From 2,000 people coming through the doors in 2005 awareness of the services given have resulted in over 6,500 people visiting the Centre in 2009, and the total footfall is, of course, far higher than this because each person makes multiple visits.

The Centre provides all services free of charge to patients and their families and carers. Its focus is service provision and, since 2005 the two charities, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and the Cancer Support Centre, have worked closely together, with Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity providing financial support (we are committed to supporting this service long term and make no administration or any other charge for this) and the Cancer Support Centre providing a wide range of therapies and information sessions.

This truly is a great service and needs as much financial support as possible. Me and Dawn are visiting the centre on Friday 23rd April to speak to the staff and patients there and see first hand how well this service works.

But please, keep on donating. Any amount is worth giving even if you have to raid your copper jars. :-P

Thanks

Steve
