Story

On the 25th of September, cadets of 1330 (Warrington) Squadron will be participating in a charity challenge at the BAE Systems site, Woodford, in order to raise funds for two very worthy causes, Help for Heroes and Francis House in Didsbury.

Competing against a number of other squadrons in the East Cheshire South Manchester (ECSM) wing, the cadets will attempt to be the fastest team to pull a 27 tonne airliner, a distance of 50m, against the clock. The aircraft, which has kindly been made available by Oxford Aviation Academy, is a BAE RJX an 85 seat passenger airliner and is presently used as a training airframe at the Oxford Aviation Academy training centre

The national charity Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The cadets themselves decided that this year they would concentrate their regular fund raising efforts towards benefiting this charity. One of our cadets has already raised a considerable sum by carrying out a sponsored cycle ride on the Trans-Pennine way and another group will be embarking on a 30 kilometre sponsored walk in the next month or so.

Francis House Children’s Hospice offers the families of terminally ill children a respite from their role as carers and gives the children a loving home from home. The children are all suffering from illnesses for which there is no known cure; Francis House gives support, comfort and medical care in a homely, happy and secure place. To maintain this support the hospice needs £222 per hour to cover its costs.

The cadets elected to adopt these two charities this year; Help for Heroes because of the squadrons affiliation with the Royal Air Force and Francis House because of its work with young people.
