'The Longest Day' - a 75 mile Quadrathon · 28 February 2008

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke. The team successfully completed the challenge in an incredible 10.5 hours, having launched from Lepe beach at 0600hrs and arriving back at Marchwood Barracks by 1630hrs. Congratulations to the whole team for their amazing efforts, and our sincere thanks to all who have sponsored them.

--------------------

Hi, my name is Dan Mason, I'm 22 years of age and a serving soldier with 17 Port & Maritime Regt RLC at McMullen Barracks, Marchwood, Southampton. Around a year ago I was diagnosed as having a Glial Brain Tumor and since then I've been undergoing assessment and treatment at the Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) in Southampton. Unfortunately, the tumor is currently considered to be inoperable, and it is also positioned such that it causes me to suffer regular epileptic type fits.

During one of my visits to the WNC, I became aware of the ‘Smile4Rich’ charitable appeal, and having spoken about the appeal to some of my regimental colleagues, we decided to organise our own fund raising event for the appeal.

The Longest Day - This year, the summer solstice falls on 20 June, and ‘The Longest Day’ will see me and seven of my colleagues (including Officers, Senior NCOs and NCOs) tackle a grueling 75-mile (120km) Quadrathon. This will involve kayaking 2.5 miles across the Solent to Cowes, then cycling a 60-mile route around the Isle of Wight, before kayaking back across the Solent to Lepe Beach, and finally a 10-mile run back to our Marchwood barracks. Our target is to raise £5,000 for the Smile4Rich Appeal.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Smile4Rich will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor us now!

Many thanks for your support.
